Closing gives owners a 'new beginning' of their own

New Beginnings Day Spa will close at the end of August. In an attempt to service their customers who might have valid, outstanding gift certificates, owners Diane Stewart and Sandra Long decided going public would be the best way to get the word out.

New Beginnings opened in May 2000 with three rooms in a basement location on Coulee Road. As the business grew, the woman moved the spa in 2002 to Outpost Circle just off I-94, Exit 4. After six years at that location, the downturn in the economy and increased competition caused the owners to move back into town last November. New Beginnings Day Spa is currently located at 2217 Vine St.

Over the years, the business expanded to offer a wide assortment of services, including massage, bodywork, skin care treatments, spa packages, waxing and tinting as well as hand and foot care.

"It was Diane's dream. She needed a partner and I was available and willing," said Long. "We learned a lot over the years."

Stewart graduated from the St. Croix Center for the Healing Arts and developed a passion for helping people through therapeutic massage.

"There were multiple factors that impacted the business," said Long, who jokes she would now be looking for employment.

"I will continue to practice massage therapy," said Stewart. "It is my love; I can't give it up."

The last day New Beginnings will be open for business is Aug. 29.

"It is a new chapter in life," said Stewart.

"It is a new beginning for all of us," said Long. "It is sad but it was a decision we had to make. We are really going to miss our clients."

Long and Stewart want to thank the community for their support.

"We feel fortunate that we have always been welcome into all of the venues," said Stewart, who along with Long were often found at community and Chamber of Commerce events spreading the word about the healthful benefits of massage therapy and offering mini-chair massages.

"We are trying to keep our emotions out of it," said Stewart.

New Beginnings will be open Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; evenings by appointment. For more information, call (715) 381-1198.
