On Friday, Aug. 10, the St. Croix County Deputies Benevolent Association held its second annual "Shop with a Cop" event. The Benevolent Association teams up with Grace Place and the Salvation Army out of New Richmond. The Benevolent Association, with the help of six local school districts were able to nominate children who fit the criteria for the program. Local law enforcement officers volunteered their time to shop with a child for new outfits, a new pair of shoes and other basic items like socks and underwear to get their school year off to a great start.
Children were paired with an officer and then took a ride in a squad car to Walmart in New Richmond to do some shopping. The day not only helped the physical needs of the child but also forged healthy relationships with local law enforcement officers who participated.
Last year, individuals and businesses within St. Croix County sponsored 45 children to go shopping with a cop by donating $6,200. This year, individuals and businesses within St. Croix County sponsored 66 children and $9,200. This program could not exist if not for community members and businesses in St. Croix County.
This year's event included volunteer officers from St. Croix County Sheriff's Office, New Richmond Police Department, Roberts Police Department, Baldwin Police Department and Glenwood City Police Department, as well as volunteers from the Salvation Army and Hudson Youth Action.
