Calling future world leaders!
The Western Wisconsin delegation of the YMCA Youth in Government (YIG) program is seeking new members to be part of their 2019 Model Assembly conference. The Model Assembly program is open to all youth grades 8-12 throughout the greater St. Croix Valley and provides a hands-on, real time simulation of the Minnesota state government. The conference will take place Thursday, Jan. 10, through Sunday, Jan. 13.
Depending on a participant's age and experience in the program, they can choose which role they'd like to participate in the assembly. From lawmakers and Supreme Court judges to lobbyist or news reporter, there is a role for everyone.
"The best part of YIG is the fact that it's completely student-led and youth empowering," said current YIG delegate Molly Diaz. "I knew little to nothing about politics before joining the program, and have now developed a passion for it."
Delegates spend their days in program areas throughout the Minnesota State Capitol and the Minneapolis Hilton debating bills, arguing court cases, meeting in sessions and much more. But it's not all work and no play.
"One of the best parts of YIG is staying in a beautiful hotel in downtown Minneapolis with a great group of staff and students. And of course the food," Diaz said.
Delegates have a blast at evening activities including karaoke, a talent show, craft projects and all you can eat popcorn and cotton candy.
Delegates attend bi-monthly meetings to get help with prep work and meet with delegation members from Hudson, River Falls, Stillwater, Afton, Hammond and Osceola. Registration is available at MNYIG.org through Nov. 29. For more information please contact Alyson Sauter at Alyson.Sauter@ymcamn.org or 651-259-9659.
