West CAP volunteer tutors help adult learners from a variety of backgrounds with basic reading, writing, or math skills so they can get a better job, get into a career training program, or begin a GED program. Plus, some tutors help with computer skills and job readiness training. West CAP tutors have also assisted immigrants and refugees learn to speak and read English better and assisted with preparation for citizenship tests.

“This campaign is designed to raise awareness for adult education and the demand for literacy services,” said Michele Erikson, Executive Director of Wisconsin Literacy. “We encourage community members to show support and consider becoming a volunteer tutor for those adults trying to improve their lives through literacy.”

Those interested in becoming a volunteer literacy tutor can learn more by visiting http://westcap.org/services/adult-literacy/ or calling Stephanie Stark, Program Coordinator, at 715-410-4735. We provide complete training for each tutor. Most tutors volunteer one-to three hours per week, often providing life-changing results for adult learners.

West CAP Literacy Program is available in St. Croix and Pierce Counties of western Wisconsin. West CAP is a local non-profit community action agency whose mission is to take action against poverty by developing the social and economic assets of low-income families and their communities and by working to create a more just and sustainable society. Wisconsin Literacy, the state leader for the 1200 Tutors in 12 Weeks campaign, is dedicated to strengthening Wisconsin's workforce, families and communities by providing leadership, support and a statewide voice for adult and family literacy efforts.
