2005 HHS grade Jake Drewiske finishes college hockey career at St. Lawrence
Hudson native Jake Drewiske is winding up a stellar career with the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team.
Drewiske, a 2005 graduate of Hudson High School, was co-captain of the St. Lawrence team whose season came to a close last weekend when it was eliminated by Dartmouth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament.
The Saints finished the regular season with a record of 10-11-1 in the ECAC and 14-19-3 overall. They finished in eighth place in the 12-team conference that includes the Ivy League schools Cornell, Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Brown.
The team will now have to wait until March 18 to see if it is selected for the NCAA men's hockey tournament.
Drewiske was featured in a story in the Watertown Daily Times going into the start of ECAC tournament play last weekend. The newspaper is located in a city nearby Canton, N.Y., home of St. Lawrence University.
The Daily Times credited Drewiske -- a 5-foot-11, 185-pound forward -- with helping hold the team together through an adversity-filled season. The head coach went on an indefinite medical leave at the start of the season, and then the Saints suffered through three losing streaks.
Drewiske and two other captains kept the team focused, the Daily Times said.
"It's a long, tough season and not only is it physically taxing, but it's mentally taxing as well," the newspaper quoted Drewiske as saying. "Sometimes when a guy needs a little pick me up here and there, Kyle (co-captain) and I and George (assistant captain) will take a guy aside and just talk to him."
St. Lawrence had been playing its best hockey of the season going into the conference tournament, winning five of its last six games before being upset by Dartmouth.
The team voted Drewiske a co-captain for his senior season. He was an assistant captain his junior year.
He had eight goals and seven assists for 15 points this season. He scored six goals in both his sophomore and junior years.
He's the son of David and Karen Drewiske of Hudson.
Drewiske played Junior A League hockey for the Sioux Falls, S.D., Stampede before going to St. Lawrence University.
His older brother Davis is a defenseman for the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League.
