Accused St. Joe town clerk appears in court
River Falls Wisconsin 2815 Prairie Drive / P.O. Box 25 54022

A former town of St. Joseph clerk-treasurer charged with felony forgery and misconduct in public office made an initial appearance in St. Croix County Circuit Court Thursday.

Mary Evelyn Stanley, 33, Forest Lake, Minn., posted a $10,000 signature bond Jan. 9 on the two felony charges and two misdemeanor theft charges. Judge Eric J. Lundell set a preliminary hearing for March 5 at 9 a.m.

The criminal complaint said town board chair Dan Gavin told investigators between May 27 and Aug. 15, 2011, Stanley had negotiated checks worth more than $5,700 on the town of St. Joseph account with Gavin's signature on them which he did not sign, allegedly for her wages.

The complaint also alleged Stanley used the town's credit card to pay her own dental bills in Hudson. She was fired from the town administrative position Dec. 21, 2011, for exceeding her legal authority.

Court records said Stanley is currently on active duty in San Antonio, Texas, with the U.S. Army's 44th Medical Battalion out of Ft. Snelling until March 2.
