Milwaukee's unemployment rate was the highest for a January since 1990, 7.1 percent, up by almost 2.5 points over the past year.

State officials said all 12 of Wisconsin's metro areas had fewer jobs and higher unemployment last month.

The lowest rate is in Madison. But even there, the jobless rate is up almost 2 full-percentage points from a year ago. It's now at 5.3.

At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 1,700 job-seekers went to the Diversity Career Day job fair Thursday. That's four times the crowd from a year ago.

Officials said more than 1,000 of the attendees were neither students nor graduates of the university.
