'Aladdin' at Old Gem

"Aladdin and the Magic Lamp," an Old Gem Theater original audience participation comedy, runs Friday, July 17, at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and Saturday, July 18, at 2 p.m. When Virginia tries to read stories from "The Tales of the Arabian Nights" to the audience, Sam complains she is boring them because theater should be a collaborative art form that invokes all of the senses. Rita suggests they could relieve the boredom by acting out the story of Aladdin but, alas, there aren¹t enough actors to tell the story properly. That's where the audience comes in. Tickets are $11 for adults and $9 for children. For reservations, call (715) 246-3285 or go to www.oldgemtheater.com. The Old Gem is located at 116 S. Knowles Ave., New Richmond.

Wanted: Adults for lunch buddies

Big Brothers Big Sisters is on a mission to find 30 "lunch buddies" by Aug. 30. The Lunch Buddies Program pairs adult mentors with elementary and middle school children in the Hudson, New Richmond and River Falls school districts. "It takes just one lunch time out of each week during the school year to laugh, talk or play a board game with a Little Brother or Little Sister," said Michel C. Tigan, St. Croix Valley branch director of BBBS of Northwestern Wisconsin.

"Volunteers meet with their Little Brother or Little Sister during a set day and time at the child's school for approximately one hour once a week. Return to work knowing that your time spent has made a tremendous difference." Anyone can volunteer for the program, including employees, retirees, people with flexible daytime hours and parents not employed outside of the home. Volunteers do not need any special experience or skill; simply be willing to be themselves and ready to have fun. Anyone interested in the program may call BBBS at (715) 381-7289
