'Shop' at Operation HELP
Warm winter clothing is available for individuals and families in the Hudson area through Operation HELP. There are also boots, shoes, toys, bedding and small household items.
Distribution is open to the public and is set for Friday, Oct. 9, 2-7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m.-noon at Trinity Academy, 1205 Sixth St.
Operation HELP president Monica Weekes said anyone is welcome to "shop" for what they need. All items are free.
Enjoy Scandinavian food
Bethel Lutheran Church Scandinavian Food Fest is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
The fest features a lunch of open-face sandwiches, including rullepolse on limpa bread, various Scandinavian foods and desserts, and beverages. Also featured are a bake sale, vendors with Scandinavian jewelry, clothing and gift items and Hardanger pieces made by women of the church.
Bethel Highlands Lutheran Church is located at 504 Frontage Road, just east of Target. The road runs parallel to I-94.
Energy help available
Applications for energy assistance will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis beginning Oct. 1 at the St. Croix County Economic Support office every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning from 8-11 a.m.
Applications may also be mailed in for processing and applications may be requested by calling (715)246-8257. Eligibility is determined by the household size and the gross income received during the three months prior to application. Some examples include: household of one, three month gross income of $5,859; household of two, $7,611; household of four, $11,267.

Monday night Spanish at the intermediate level is available Oct. 12 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at St. Patrick's School, 403 St. Croix St. The fee for the class is the cost of Ventanas Lengua textbook and video, and donation to the instructor. This class will continue through the school year and is open to all adults with some rudimentary knowledge of Spanish.

Crafterspeople are needed for the Hudson Holiday Boutique on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Hudson High School. The event is being presented by Youth Action Hudson. Space fee is $40.

Pageant for special-needs girls
A Crowning Achievements pageant will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. in the Hudson Prairie Elementary School gym. The pageant is open to all young women with special needs age 16 and up in the Hudson area. The mission of the pageant is to provide the opportunity for special- needs girls to have the same pageant experience as other young girls, while boosting their confidence and having fun. Each participant will receive a title and crown for their contribution to their community. Another goal is to increase the awareness and the involvement of the community with people who have special needs.
No tickets required. Donations will be accepted at the door.

Volunteers are needed to help seniors through the Interfaith Volunteer Program. Drivers are needed to bring individuals from River Falls and Hudson to or from Hudson for adult day respite and therapy on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also needed are substitute drivers for home meal delivery in River Falls and Hudson. Companionship and light housekeeping requests are still open.

Stem cell research discussed
St. Croix Valley Christians for Life monthly meeting is 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, at St. Croix Valley Cabinetry, 476 County A, Hudson. A by Linda Kluge, St. Croix Valley Christians for Life, will focus on stem cell research and the sanctity of human life.

Learn genealogical research
St. Croix Valley Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15 in the River Falls Public Library. Mary Wickersham and Sheila Northrop will demonstrate the various ways to search on Ancestry.com.
They specialize in family history and genealogy research in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, Illinois, and Iowa. At 6:30 members will assist others with beginning genealogy questions.
