Area walks offer fun and exercise
Walkers from around the upper Midwest will gather in Stillwater and Afton, Minn., on Saturday, Oct. 24, and in Hudson and River Falls, on Sunday, Oct. 25, to participate in a series of recreational walks. These walks, known internationally as Volksmarches, are sponsored by walk clubs located in Madison and Minneapolis/St. Paul. These recreational walks are available to the public at no cost and follow predetermined routes with both directions and maps to guide walkers either individually or in small groups.
The start location for the Hudson walk is Lakefront Park at the corner of First and Locust streets. The start for the River Falls walk is Glen Park on W. Park St. Walkers may start the Hudson walk after 8 a.m. and must be finished by noon. Walkers may start the River Falls walk after 1 p.m. and must be finished by 5 p.m. Both walks have optional walk distance choices of either three or six miles. Shorter walks are wheelchair and stroller accessible, but may prove difficult. Pets are allowed on these walks. Water and facilities are available at the start and finish areas.
Volksmarching began in Germany during the 1960s and is called the sport of the people. Individuals can walk at their own pace, and have several hours to complete each walk, Volksmarching is a family-oriented, noncompetitive activity. With registration for the event, the participant accepts the guidelines for American Volkssport Association (AVA) events and agrees to observe the principles of good sportsmanship.
