Azul Tequila Mexican Restaurant serves up both atmosphere and food
Get ready to tickle your taste buds. The Azul Tequila Mexican Restaurant Bar and Grille is serving up a vast menu of Tex-Mex style food along with authentic Mexican entrees as well. The family-owned business opened Dec. 26 and has been gaining popularity daily.
A small dynasty of brothers have been sharing top notch Mexican food in three locations: Kentucky, central Wisconsin and northwestern Wisconsin.
The Azul Tequila Bar and Grille in Hudson joins an Eau Claire location by the same name both owned by Oscar Guzman (Garcia) who is continuing the family tradition. His oldest brother owns and operates eight restaurants in the Kentucky. His middle brother owns and operates three under the name of El Mezcal in Marshfield, Wausau and Wisconsin Rapids.
According to Jose Osbaldo (Guzman), who has opened restaurants for the brothers at other locations including Kentucky, "Oscar decided to try to do the best for the people in Hudson because they deserved a good Mexican restaurant."
From the bright and lively décor which reflects a traditional hacienda design to the full service bar, customers -- it seats approximately 180 -- can be transported to a pre-revolution Mexican setting while enjoying a vast selection of both Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican food. Because he started with an empty shell Oscar could create exactly the atmosphere he wanted for the newest restaurant in the family. It also includes patio dining, with a fountain, which will be completed in the spring.
The name Azul (blue) Tequila originates from the specific area in Mexican where Oscar's family is from. It is apparently one of the only areas in the country where the blue agave tequila plant grows and the economy is largely based on producing tequila.
While seven different kinds of Margaritas are offered, the food is a big draw as well. The menu includes items from the grille, salads, seafood, and of course rice and beans which are two items that come with every plate.
"We offer three primary meats; chicken, beef and pork," said Osbaldo, who also noted they offer carry out orders, gift certificates and require no reservations. "Our food is like Tex-Mex. We decided to mix, between Mexican and American food because straight Mexican food can be too spicy for some."
Osbaldo lists zarape, fajitas, carne oaxaca and chimichangas as favorite traditional dishes.
"Of course taco salads do not exist in Mexico but we offer them," said Osbaldo. "We also have salmon and a seafood entrée, Enchilada de Papa Con Camerones which are among the many items on the extensive menu." He also noted that Tex-Mex cuisine originated in Austin, Texas.
Azul Tequila offers children's plates and Mexican desserts along with a tradition beverage, rice water which is served hot or cold.
