Baker earns spot at state diving

Junior Amanda Baker will be the Raiders' lone representative at the weekend's WIAA State Swimming and Diving Championships in Madison.

Baker earned a berth at state by winning a sectional diving title last Friday night at the middle school pool, taking first in the Division 1 competition with a score of 384.15.

Raider sophomore Kendall Tierney just missed going to state as an extra qualifier. Tierney finished fourth at Friday night's sectional with a score of 332.1. The first place finisher at each of the six sectionals, and the next 18 top scores from all the sectionals, qualify for the state meet. Tierney came up just 1.65 short of the final qualifying spot.

Sophomore Gina Coutler finished tenth in Friday night's diving with a score of 259.8.

The Division 1 state diving competition will be held Saturday, Nov. 13 beginning at 10 a.m. at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison.

Last weekend the Raiders finished eighth as a team in the 14-team sectional field with a total of 151 points. Eau Claire Memorial was first with 344 followed by Wausau West with 316 and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln with 276.

Hudson had a pair of eighth-place finishes in the relay events at Saturday's swimming portion of the sectional meet. Catie Weese, Megan Haney, Trisha Wood and Ronni Schoenherr combined for a time of 2 minutes, 1.52 seconds in the 200 medley relay, and 3:58.47 in the 400 freestyle relay.

The Raiders had a pair of 11th-place finishes in the individual events. Freshman Abby Duerst placed 11th in the 200 yard freestyle in 2:10.57 and Haney was 11th in the 50 freestyle in 26.19 seconds. Weese finished just behind Haney in 12th place in the 50 free in 26.52 seconds.

Haney also finished 15th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:17.2.

Kayla Lorenz swam to 13th place in the 200 freestyle in 2:11.21 and finished 12th in the 500 freestyle in 5:52.23. Duerst added a 14th-place time of 5:54.08 in the 500 free while Hannah Manley was 23rd in 6:22.93.

In the 100 yard individual medley, Wood finished 15th with a time of 2:31.27 and Hannah VanValkenburg was 16th in 2:32.53, while in the 100 butterfly, VanValkenburg placed 12th in 1:07.72 and Wood was 16th in 1:09.78.

Schoenherr posted a 17th-place time of 26.81 seconds in the 50 freestyle before finishing 19th in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.1.
