Barn in town of Troy goes up in flames
The cause of a fire that consumed a barn at 609 Swedish Mission Road west of River Falls between county roads M and MM Wednesday night, Oct. 9, is still being investigated by the River Falls Fire Department.
The property is owned by Edith E. Nelson, and her two brothers Scott and Anders.
Firefighters were sent to the blaze just before 8:30 p.m. Later assistance was requested and received from Prescott, Hudson and Roberts fire departments.
River Falls Fire Chief Scott Nelson said the barn was engulfed in flames when firefighters first arrived. It ended up being a total loss.
Nelson said firefighters were at the scene for 2 ½ hours. There was no loss of animal life, no one was hurt and no other buildings affected by the fire.
No damage estimate is yet available.
Nelson called the firefighting strategy defensive, saying no one entered the barn.
“Even though this was a significant loss for the owners, the important thing to remember is that nobody got hurt,” Nelson said.
The destroyed barn was a 32 by 34 two-story wood structure from the early 1900s and used as a horse barn.
More recently the building was used for storage. Several years ago it was also used as an antique store.
