'Becky's New Car' at Phipps Sept. 13-29
“Becky’s New Car,” a touching comedy by Steven Dietz, will be performed Sept. 13-29 at The Phipps Center for the Arts.
Kari Steinbach directs this new comedy at The Phipps. The production invites the audience into Becky’s world by breaking the fourth wall from the moment the play begins. The audience becomes Becky’s confidant and even her cohort as they help her make decisions that alter the course of her hum-drum life and take her on a ride she could never have anticipated.“The play is a significant challenge for the cast as they maintain control of the story through the breakneck pace that the action falls into. The level of audience participation requires that the cast be on their toes at all times, as no amount of rehearsal can prepare them for all the possibilities that may arise with a new-every-night audience. Our rehearsals include brainstorming all the things that might arise when we invite the audience to participate in our adventure.”Steinbach has been a freelance director in the Twin Cities area for the past 20-plus years, most recently directing “La Bella Cinderella” for the Minnesota Fringe Festival. She staged “Over the River and Through the Woods” and “The Lion in Winter” for Lakeshore Players, “The Dixie Swim Club” for Lyric Arts, and “Pride and Prejudice” and “The Last Night of Ballyhoo” for the University of Northwestern - St. Paul.Nine performances will be given Sept. 13 to 29 on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. as well as Sundays at 2:30 p.m. on the main stage.Tickets are $22 for adults and $15 for students of all ages, with a $2 discount for seniors on the Sunday matinee.
