Board supports deer feeding ban

During their March 20 meeting, St. Croix County Board members voted to urge a ban on feeding deer.

The resolution says scientific testing shows that artificially bringing deer together can cause transmission of diseases such as tuberculosis and chronic wasting disease.

Congregate feeding of deer is reason for concern because of the possible transmission of diseases, said Supervisor Richard "Buzz" Marzolf, town of Troy.

Feeding deer encourages them to stay in an area rather than roaming from place to place to find food, said Mike Reiter, secretary/ treasurer of the St. Croix County Sportsman's Alliance. He said attracting deer to non-hunting areas leads to more deer/ car accidents and noted that half of all vehicle accidents in the county involve deer.

The resolution will be forwarded to state legislators, the governor, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

Setback ordinance amended

Also last week, the County Board approved a zoning amendment that will allow the Planning and Zoning Committee to approve reduction of road setbacks on existing final plats or certified survey maps to new setbacks in ordinances.

An ordinance revision adopted last year allowed the setback reduction only on vacant lots. Setbacks that had already been recorded on plats couldn't be changed, even though they were more restrictive than the new law.

Last year's change cut road setbacks in half but left some existing structures as nonconforming uses, said Planning and Zoning Director Dave Fodroczi.

He said this most recent change was initiated by town officials and landowners and the initiative was led by Kinnickinnic Town Chairwoman Mary Murphy.

Supervisor Gordon Awsumb, who represents the town of Warren and parts of the town of Kinnickinnic, said he has a number of constituents who wanted to build additions but couldn't without this change.

Rezoning

The following parcels were rezoned:

  • At the request of Dennis and Dawn Neumann, a 117-acre parcel in the town of Somerset was rezoned from Agricultural to Agricultural- Residential. The property is being rezoned for eventual sale.
  • At the request of Ted and Bergetta Anderson, an 87-acre parcel in the town of St. Joseph was rezoned from Agricultural to Agricultural-Residential. The property is being rezoned for possible future development.
