Jonathon D. Wierstad, 24, who was living at 917 St. Croix St. at the time of the incident, was arrested by Hudson police on April 9 and has been charged with felony physical child abuse –- recklessly causing great bodily harm. He was living at the residence with the boy’s mother.

According to investigators, the boy sustained major head trauma. After first being transported to Hudson Hospital, the child was transferred to Children’s Hospital St. Paul where doctors said the bleeding in the front and back of the boy’s brain was consistent with child abuse. During surgery 1.5 liters of blood were drained from the boy’s brain.

As of Tuesday, the boy’s condition was listed as critical and his prognosis was grave.

According to police reports, Wierstad first told investigators that the boy tripped over a pile of clothes in a bathroom. When he was questioned again, Wierstad allegedly changed his story and said the boy fell on his head when Wierstad failed to catch him after throwing him into the air.

As a condition of his bail, Wierstad was ordered to have no contact with the boy’s family or with witnesses in the case. He will be in St. Croix County court for his preliminary hearing on April 29.
