Boys' gymnasts heading to state
The Hudson Boy's Gymnastics Team finished the second half of its regular season with top rankings and is now headed for the Wisconsin Men's State Meet this weekend in Hartford.
On Feb. 1, the boys competed at the John Roethlisberger National Invitational and finished in second place in the team standings out of the 16 Midwest Region teams that competed at Level
5. The meet was held at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion, which is home to the Gopher Men's Gymnastics Team.
Yuri Bronson, having his best season yet, ranked first in the all-around for the 12-plus age group with first-place finishes in the floor, pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar. Wally Magnuson was first in the all-around in the 10-11-year-old group with a personal best score of 15.6 in the floor, as well as first-place finishes in the vault and parallel bars.
Ethan Ransom was second all-around in that age group with a score of 15.1 and first place in the pommel horse and the high bar. Ryan McDevitt was ninth in the vault and high bar for a 27th place ranking, and Michael Rebozo ranked 14th in the 9-year-old division with a 10th place finish in the high bar.
The boys went on the road for their next meet to Big Bend for the Salto National Invitational Meet on Feb. 27. Here the boys finished first in the team competition by sweeping every event.
In the 10-plus age group, Magnuson was first in the all-around with first-place finishes in the floor, pommel, parallel bars and high bar. Ransom was second all-around with a first place in the vault while Bronson was third with the top score in the rings.
Rebozo ranked 12th with a personal best score of 13.8 on the floor, netting him fifth place in that event, and McDevitt rounded out the top 20 with a 19th place ranking.
The final regular season meet brought the team back to the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion for the 2009 MIGS Program Men's JO National Invitational & Team Cup Championships. This meet is a benefit with the proceeds supporting the men's college gymnastics programs and scholarships.
The Hudson boys brought home the second-place cup. Bronson finished with another first-place ranking in the 12-plus age group and his personal best all-around score of 88.0. In the 10-11 age group, Magnuson and Ransom once again snagged the top two spots with McDevitt coming in 20th. Rebozo was 12th in the 9-year-old age group.
The boys will now compete this weekend in the 2009 USA Wisconsin State Men's Gymnastics Championships, where they will be once again seek a state title. The competition starts at noon Sunday, March 29, at Hartford High School.
