Browns say no shot-putting for Thomas
University of Wisconsin's Joe Thomas will not compete in this weekend's Big Ten Conference outdoor track meet at Penn State.
That's because the NFL's Cleveland Browns won't let him throw the shot-put.
The Browns drafted Thomas as the third overall pick a week-and-a-half ago and because they want to protect their investment they said no when Badgers' track coach Ed Nuttycombe asked for permission to let Thomas compete.
He had a legitimate shot at a league title. Thomas owns the school indoor record for the shot-put at 62 feet, one inch and he showed up at practice last week tossing a 57-footer.
The Badger men are going for the fourth straight league title, which would be a new school record. The meet begins Friday.
Meanwhile, senior Paul Hubbard was named the Big Ten's field-athlete of the week after achieving NCAA qualifying marks in the long-jump and a spot on the Badger 400-meter relay team.
Hubbard played football as well.
