With budget tight UW chancellors must now approve all hirings

For now, anybody who wants a job at a University of Wisconsin campus will have to get the chancellor's blessing.

University president Kevin Reilly tightened hiring procedures on the 26 campuses today (Friday).

He said chancellors must now approve all new hirings and they should only fill jobs which are most essential to the UW's mission.

The order came just two days after Gov. Jim Doyle said the deficit for the next budget had grown from $3 billion to $5 billion.

University spokesman David Giroux calls it a major change for an organization with more than 30,000 employees.

Until now, department heads approved their own hirings.

Gov. Jim Doyle ordered a similar change elsewhere in state government.

The Administration Department must now approve all hirings with the UW, the Legislature and the court system being exempt.
