Cabela’s newest store in Woodbury opens
“We sell fun.” That was how Shelby Rockhold, the general manager of Cabela’s newest store in Woodbury, described what Cabela’s does.
On Thursday, May 15, Cabela’s officially opened its store in Woodbury at 10:45 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and opened the doors for business at 11 a.m. It is the 55th store in Cabela’s nationwide chain of stores, providing hunting, fishing, camping, clothing and other related outdoor gear for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.
The Woodbury Cabela’s is located at 8400 Hudson Road in the Tamarack Village shopping Center just off Interstate 94.
It is the fourth store in Minnesota along with Rogers, East Grand Forks and Owatonna. Recognizing the enthusiasm for the outdoors found in Minnesota and also western Wisconsin, Minnesota joins Texas as the only two states where Cabela’s has four stores.
Cabela’s announced a year ago it was going to build a new store in Woodbury to the delight of outdoor enthusiasts in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. For months construction progress has been monitored by sportsman as they pass the store which can be clearly seen from I-94.
The store has the typical log and stonework, wood siding and metal roof that is the hallmark of Cabela’s stores. The Woodbury store has 85,000 square feet so it is a little smaller than some of their other stores, according to Wes Remmer, Cabela’s communications specialist. However, it will have everything the other stores have, he pointed out.
The Woodbury store has a two-story mountain with more than 25 displays of wild game from the upper Midwest. As well they have an aquarium stocked with fish representing local species. Both of these are well known features found in all of their stores.
Over 200 additional wild life mounts are displayed on the center isle above the floor. The mounts are placed on recovered barn wood that came from Wisconsin. Behind the mounts are large hand canvas murals depicting the normal habitat associated with each species. Remmer said the elevated wildlife displays continues the Cabela’s tradition of making the store an outdoor experience at the same time preserving more room for product display.
“It more efficiently provides customer service with maintaining the Cabela’s experience,” Remmer said.
Walls are also adorned with large blowups of old hunting and fishing photos which celebrates longstanding outdoor traditions while adding to the ambiance.
The Woodbury Cabela’s store includes a conference center for sportsmen’s groups, seminars and other events to include birthday parties for younger sportsmen. There is also a café that provides lunches along with a deli and fudge shop.
Another long-standing feature of Cabela’s stores is a gun library in addition to the normal gun department. The gun library features old, collectable and unique guns. Here guns can range from $200 to $10,000. The oldest gun in the store is a 1864 Springfield percussion rife. It was selling for $1,000.
There is a complete archery shop within the hunting department that includes a 12-yard long archery range.
In the fishing department there is an extensive fly fishing area that may be one of the largest in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Not only does it have a wide assortment of fly fishing equipment such as rods, reels, lines and flies, but also a substantial selection of fly tying supplies.
Cabela’s originally began in 1961 by Dick, Mary and Jim Cabela in Sidney, Neb., by selling flies and fly tying equipment through the mail. Their stores, like the Woodbury store, have remained true to their company’s roots by continuing to provide a large selection of flies and tying accessories.
The camping department has a major cooking section with an impressive display of grills, smokers and other cooking equipment to include a major array of cooking rubs, sauces and marinades.
The store also sells boats and tractors in their power sports department which will include servicing. Cabela’s features its own brand of tractors which are available at Woodbury.
The Woodbury store will employ approximately 185 people in both full-time and part-time positions. At Cabela’s employees are referred to as outfitters and Rockhold, the store’s general manager, gives credit to staff members as “taking pride in their passion for the outdoors.”
Although its grand opening takes place on May 15, Rockhold points out that they will have a family events throughout the weekend. A number of outdoor and sports celebrities are scheduled throughout the weekend including Mike Mauti of the Minnesota Vikings and former Viking Pete Bercich as well as outdoor personalities such as James Holst of In-Depth Outdoors, Chip Leer from All-Star Walleye School, Brent and Nicole Larson from Field of Dreams TV as well as others.
Cabela’s prides itself in having something for everyone in the family in addition to proving a wide assortment of hunting, fishing, and camping equipment, clothing and other outdoor accessories. The fun is just beginning.
