Candidate drops out of District 2 council race
River Falls Wisconsin 2815 Prairie Drive / P.O. Box 25 54022

The challenger for the District 2 Hudson City Council seat occupied by Mary Yacoub has dropped out of the race.

In a phone call to the Star-Observer last Friday, Joe Allen said he will be moving to Madison to take a new job.

“It’s something that came my way after I got into the race, and it’s such a good opportunity I can’t walk away from it,” Allen said.

He’s leaving to be the vice president of advertising sales and marketing for Madison Newspapers Inc., publisher of the Wisconsin State Journal and The Capital Times newspapers.

Allen currently is a director of advertising for the StarTribune newspaper in Minneapolis.

“I love Hudson, so (there were) a lot of conversations with my family about this one,” he said. “…I definitely did a lot of soul searching.”

Allen said he is talking to people who supported his candidacy to see if there is someone in the 2nd District interested in challenging Yacoub as a write-in candidate.

It is too late to have Allen’s name removed from the April 1 ballot. City Administrator Devin Willi said the City Council would choose his replacement if he were to win the election.

Last January, Allen said he got into the race because of Yacoub’s vote against rezoning the former St. Croix Meadows dog track to be the site of a new high school.

Yacoub was first elected to the District 2 seat in April 2010. She’s the mother of three and a self-employed painter.

In January, she told the Star-Observer that her goals for the city include construction of a new public safety building “on the hill,” completion of a warming house in Weitkamp Park, and construction of a pedestrian path along Stageline Road from the Heritage Greens and Lighthouse subdivisions to Carmichael Road.
