Candlelight Ski and Hike Jan. 25 at Willow River State Park
The annual Candlelight Ski and Hike at Willow River State Park is planned from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Nature Center.
"We will need some cooperation from Mother Nature to pull this off," said Park manager Darrel Richer. "Although we have some snow, the trails are icy (at press time, Jan. 12). We do need at least 4 inches of new snow to groom the trails. Without new snow we will need to cancel. It is January in Wisconsin; we should get some snow."
Skiers may ski up to two miles of easy trails lit by candles. Hikers have a half mile trail behind the Nature Center.
This pre-event for the Hot Air Affair in Hudson will have at least one tethered hot air balloon.
A bonfire will be at the boat launch area. Art Doyle's Spokes and Pedals will provide refreshments on the classroom side of the Nature Center.
Volunteers from the park's friends group (OWLs) will staff the gift shop and exhibit area. The Willow River Nordic Ski Association (also OWLs) will have the trail grooming equipment on display at the Nature Center.
The event is free with a vehicle admission sticker. Volunteers are needed for set up and clean up. For information, call the park office to sign up (715) 386-5931.
