Canine officer crosses the border
River Falls Wisconsin 2815 Prairie Drive / P.O. Box 25 54022

The officer the Hudson Police Department sponsored for training to be its police dog handler has left for a new beat.

Todd Ludvik has taken a position with the St. Paul Police Department, Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen informed the City Council in Sept. 30 memo.

Ludvik trained for 12 weeks earlier this year with the St. Paul department, learning to handle the Hudson department's new German shepherd police dog, Brisco.

The pair officially went on duty in Hudson in June.

Trainers often emphasize the strong bond that is required between canine officers and the dogs they handle.

The Hudson City Council on Oct. 5 authorized filling the patrol officer vacancy that was created when Ludvik left the Hudson department. His last day with the local department was reported to be Sunday, Oct. 11.

Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen wasn't available for comment on the situation earlier this week. His father, Dale W. Jensen of Forest Lake, Minn., died Friday and the funeral was on Wednesday.

Hudson Police Lt. Paul Larson indicated that Brisco will remain with the Hudson department.

"He's our dog," Larson said. He said Jensen is working with the St. Paul Police Department on what to do next.

Larson said other questions on the matter would have to wait until Jensen's return to work on Thursday.

Ludvik began his duty with the Hudson Police Department on Feb. 1, 2004. He came to Hudson from the Ladysmith Police Department.

He told the Star-Observer last June that it was his idea to revive the Hudson department's canine program following the retirement of the previous police dog, Zeus.

Zeus was handled by former Hudson Police Sgt. Robert Oehmke.
