Car stolen in 1979 comes out of the Fox river
A car pulled from the Fox River near downtown Green Bay this week was stolen more than 30 years ago.
Police Lt. Andy Lewis says the 1975 Plymouth Valiant was reported stolen in March of 1979, by Paul Renard. Renard had left the car running in the parking lot of a bar.
Lewis says after investigators removed all of the silt out of the car, they found that someone apparently used a tire iron to hold the gas pedal down, to drive the car into the river. He says that pedal was rusted to the floorboard and the transmission was still in drive.
Lewis says there was no other evidence found in the car and the case is closed. Meanwhile Renard died in a boating accident in Green Bay last June. He was a Minnesota resident whose family has a cottage in the Green Bay area.
