Carol S. Gilbert, 69
Carol Susan Gilbert, age 69, of Clintonville, Wis., formerly of Hudson, died April 11, at home surrounded by her family, after a 13 year battle with amyloidosis, a rare blood disease which is a "cousin" to multiple myeloma.
Born Jan. 10, 1945, in Madison, Wis., to William and Shirley (Ethun) Guelzow, while Carol's father was fighting in France and Germany in World War II.
After preschool years in Madison and Janesville, Wis., Carol grew up in Beloit, Wis., where her father owned Bredesen Office Supply. Graduated in 1963 from Beloit Memorial High School, where she was an honor student, and played the lead role, Anna, in "The King and I".
Attended Lawrence University 1963-65 and UW-Madison 1965-67, receiving a BS in Education in January 1968. She later received a Master's Degree in Reading Education from UW-River Falls.
Carol and William Gilbert were united in marriage in Beloit, Wis., on June 22, 1968.
She taught elementary school in Beloit, (Spring, 1968), Monona, Wis., (1968-71), and Hudson (1971-73). Then retired to raise their family. Resumed teaching, focusing on reading, in the Hudson schools (1981-2008), when the progressive impact of amyloidosis forced her to retire.
Survived by her husband, William of Clintonville, Wis.; FOUR wonderful children, Tiffany Gilbert of North Hudson, Collin (Rachel) of North Branch, Minn., Derek (Shannon Nicolai) of North Hudson, and Megan (Patrick) Gilbert-Garvey of Madison; five grandchildren, Jack, Sam, and Liam Gilbert, and Shae and Colten Nicolai; siblings, Connie (Thom) Gulash of Manitowoc, Wis., Richard (Gayle) Guelzow of Northbrook, Ill., and Felice Ethun of Lancaster, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation at Bethel Lutheran Church, 920 Third St., Hudson, 5-8 p.m. on Friday, May 2, and 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. Memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a luncheon at church. Inurnment will be Sunday, June 22, Carol and Bill's 46th Anniversary, in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Town of Lebanon, Waupaca County, Wis.
Memorials are encouraged to the Carol Gilbert Scholarship Fund, for an annual scholarship to a Hudson High School graduate who benefited from the reading intervention program that Carol helped develop and taught at Hudson Middle School.
