Chinchil-la opened just a couple of weeks ago and the buzz about the new business keeps getting louder.

Mimi Koch, opened the by-appointment-only store, at 414 First Street. What was formerly a potato warehouse and then a single family home is now Chinchil-la. From the moment one approaches, it is easy to suspect you will be turning you head in circles trying to take in the collection of items tucked in every corner inside and out.

The main gallery is the entire first floor -- 2,000 square feet of comfortable space with wood floors and a corner fireplace. The inventory practically begs the guest to take a closer look.

When you do, you may find Waterford Crystal, bolts of designer fabric or a Henredon Snow Tiger chair.

Leather sectionals, lamps and eye catching handbags are nestled among designer iron tables, Platt bar stools and a Century Furniture dining room set.

Koch is a Wisconsin native, having grown up on dairy farm in Conrath.

"The farmer's daughter married the cheese maker's son," said Koch, whose background is in real estate.

"Over the years of working with architects and designers in real estate, I felt I always had a passion for the décor part of it, whether it was interior or exterior."

"I'm a designer at heart," said Koch. "The last six years it was a direction I wanted to go.

"It has all come together," said Koch. "It is filled with fashion, flair and fabulous finds." The collection includes designer furniture, consignment and selected items from estates sales. "We will have a spattering of artwork, shoes and accessories for the home and patio."

Chinchil-la offers better quality pieces that people can purchase as investments. Koch goes so far as to "interview" the pieces before she considers adding them to her collection.

"We are in the process of creating "Chinchil-la" label totes, one of a kind artistry antlers and custom dog collars," said Koch. Belle, the couple's rescue Entlebucher Mountain dog, is the greeter and mascot.

"She will head up our pet section division," said Koch. "It will feature custom dog accessories. A percentage of the sales of these items will go to local pet rescue groups."

"We have something for everyone," said Koch. "We feel we offer good pieces at what I consider to be great values." Koch returned to Hudson with her husband Dave last June to be close to their three grandchildren.

"They make life perfect," said Koch.

Chinchil-la is open by appointment only. Call (715) 808-0630 or go to www.chinchil-la.com Koch also plans to have weekly open houses.

"If the signs are out and the balloons flying," said Koch of her sandwich board signs with balloons attached, "we are open."
