Chippewa County Deputy dies from injuries suffered in HWY 53 accident
A Chippewa County deputy in died Saturday after being hit by a car at the scene of a semi-truck fire in the southbound lanes of Highway 53 just south of Bloomer on Friday.
Wisconsin State Patrol officials say that at around 9:44 p.m. Deputy Jason Zunker, 31, was outside of his patrol car directing traffic when he was struck by a southbound car driven by Erika Kressin, 21, Chippewa Falls.
Zunker suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
Highway 53 was closed down for several hours Friday night because of the accident.
State Patrol officials are continuing their investigation into the crash and Kressin has not yet been charged with any offenses. Eau Claire media reported that she was extremely distraught over the officer's death.
