City and workers agree on new labor contract

The city of Hudson and its clerical and public works employees have agreed on new labor contracts that give employees 2.5 percent wage increases in each of the three years of the contract.

The City Council approved the deal after discussing it in a closed session near the end of its June 20 meeting.

Members of Teamsters General Union, Local 662, had ratified the contracts earlier this year.

Liz Moline, leader of the local clerical and library workers, said they came to a mediated agreement with the city a few months ago and have been waiting for the City Council to approve the contract.

The city's public works, sewer and water utility workers have a separate contract that also was negotiated through a mediator.

The agreement covers the years 2005 through 2007. It applies to 24 clerical and library workers (16 full-time and eight part-time) and 21 public works, sewer and water utility employees (all but one full-time).

Clerical and library workers' wages for 2005, under the new contract, range from $9.61 per hour for a beginning parking meter attendant to $19.63 per hour for the highest-paid administrative assistant.

Wages for public works, sewer and water utility employees start at $15.12 per hour for a part-time janitor and rise to $21.61 per hour for the chief water plant operator.

The city also contributes to employees' Wisconsin Retirement System accounts. The 2005 contribution rate is 10.2 percent of employees' annual earnings, according to City Administrator Devin Willi.

Willi said the city in 2005 will pay $1,280 per month in health insurance premiums for employees on a family plan and $519 per month for employees with single coverage.

Employees with family coverage pay between $6 and $140 per month for health insurance, depending on the plan they select. Employees with single coverage pay between $2 and $60 for health insurance.

There were few changes in contract language, Willi said, but employees did gain additional days off to attend the funeral of a grandchild or son- or daughter-in-law. The new contract allows them three days off in the event of the death of one of those family members.
