City officials' iPads arrive
Members of the Hudson City Council got some brief training on operating their new iPads prior to a special meeting on the city's five-year financial plan last week.
The council on May 23 voted 3-2 to buy the 11 iPads for a total $8,470. The price -- $770 per unit -- included a warranty, software and accessories. Certain city officials, including the administrator and finance officer, also received the devices.
Michael Kruger, the city's information technology director, told the council that using the iPads to deliver information to city officials could greatly reduce the use of paper. He estimated that the city used 46,000 sheets of office paper per year to print the information given to officials prior to a City Council meeting.
Kruger said it took the city staff an average of more than eight hours to prepare the information packets, which were often delivered by a police officer.
Alderpersons Randy Morrissette II, John Hoggatt and Kurt TeWinkel voted to buy the iPads. Council President Rich Vanselow and Alderperson Mary Yacoub opposed the action. Alderperson Lori Bernard was absent.
