Postal carriers collect food

The National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service are holding their nationwide food drive Saturday, May 9. To participate, residents should leave non-perishable items by their mailboxes, and Hudson letter carriers will pick them up.

Items collected locally will stay in the Hudson area to help families here. Last year, 2,500 pounds were collected.

Library book sale coming up

The Hudson Area Joint Library is holding a spring book sale Thursday, May 14 (3-8:30 p.m.), Friday, May 15 (10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.), and Saturday, May 16 (9 a.m.-noon), at the library, 911 Fourth St.

Book donations are accepted all year long, including books from estates, along with videos, DVDs and newer magazines (donations are tax-deductible). For more information, call the library, (715) 386-3101.

HOME meal is tonight

The free Hudson Outreach Meal for Everyone, scheduled the first and third Thursday of the month, is tonight at Bethel Lutheran Church, 920 Third St. Serving is from 5-6:30 p.m.

Lions screen kids' vision

The Hudson Lions Clubs are conducting a vision screening of 4- and 5-year-olds from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 30, in the lower level of WESTconsin Credit Union, 1601 Maxwell Drive.

Classic cars return downtown

The first evening of the Locust Street Classic Car Show is from 6-9 p.m. Friday, May 8, on Locust Street between Second and Third streets. The event runs the second Friday of the month through September.

Send boxes to soldiers

The St. Croix Valley Republican Women are hosting their annual soldier fund-raiser/stuff the boxes event from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at the Valley House. Contact Angi at angiweicherding@sbcglobal.net for a list of what soldiers need.

Writers combine meeting times

The Pen and ThINK Writers Group will hold combined meetings during the summer months. The Tuesday morning group will meet with the evening group at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Hudson Bagel. The group is open to any writer, beginner or polished.

Bethel Highlands has carnival

Bethel Highlands Preschool is holding a Kids Karnival Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 9. The church is located at 504 Frontage Road.

The public is invited to participate in games with prizes, jumpers, a petting zoo, silent auction of gift cards and handmade goods, hot dogs, popcorn, fresh cotton candy and more.

Plants for preschoolers

Willow River State Park, 1034 County A, is holding a preschool class about plants from 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday or Wednesday, May 12 or 13.

Children will learn which plants are helpful and which ones may hurt people. They will also take home a flower and vegetable seeds in pots. Cost is $10 per child.

Beekeepers gather May 14

The St. Croix County Beekeepers meet at 7 p.m. the second Thursday of the month at the county agriculture office, 1960 Eighth Ave., Baldwin. The next meeting is May 14. The group will discuss swarm control, prevention and capture. Everyone is welcome.

DI team raises funds

The state champion Destination Imagination team from Hudson Prairie Elementary will present two events Saturday, May 9.

A music video retelling of the fairy tale "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" will be at 11 a.m. in the auditorium at Hudson High School, 1501 Vine St. The performance is free, but donations are welcome.

The team is also hosting a fund-raising event from 4-6 p.m. at the Hammond Hotel. Included for $10 are live music, a performance by the team and a meal. Tickets may be purchased at the Hammond Hotel.

Bird talk, moon hike

A bird talk is scheduled at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 9, in the nature center at Willow River State Park, 1034 County A. Ed and Angie Colosky will talk about origons, evolution and classification. A full-moon hike will follow the talk.

Official offers job counseling

Aracely Olguin from the state Regional Job Center will be at the Hudson Library, 911 Fourth St., from 5-6:30 p.m. Monday, May 11, to provide information and advice on preparing for a job search, developing a resume, writing cover letters and looking for jobs.

Perch Lake group meets

Friends of Perch Lake are holding their annual meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, in the park - at the playground pavilion or the equipment shed in case of rain.

Those attending are invited to bring a picnic and make a day of it.

Take local health survey

The St. Croix County Community Health Improvement Process Committee is asking county residents to voice their views and opinions by responding to a community health needs assessment. Some homes will receive the assessment, which is also available in county libraries, hospitals and public health offices. It is also available online at www.co.saint-croix.wi.us. Buy plants in River Falls

The River Falls Garden Club is holding its 12th annual plant sale from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 9, at the National Guard Armory, 815 W. Division St. in River Falls.

For sale will be annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, tomatoes, annual and perennial bedding plants - all grown by club members and UW-River Falls horticulture students.

HHS swing choir performs

The Hudson High School Swing Choir is presenting its spring swing concert, "All You Need is Love," at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, in the auditorium at the school, 1501 Vine St.

Admission is a free-will donation.

New summer choir starts

Hudson High School Choral Director Andy Haase is starting the Hudson Community Summer Choir and invites area singers to join.

The group will rehearse at the school from 7-9 p.m. Mondays beginning June 15 and concluding with a public performance at 7 p.m. Monday, July 27.

The choir is open to any singer interested in performing challenging, fun and rewarding choral literature. There is no audition process, but previous singing experience is recommended. Haase will conduct the group and Jodell Krause will accompany it.

Ballroom dancing at Phipps

Ballroom dance parties are offered from 7:30-10 p.m. Saturdays, May 16 and June 20, in the dance studio of The Phipps Center for the Arts.

Tom Larson will offer a ballroom dance lesson from 7:30 to 8:30. The parties are an opportunity to have fun trying out new dance skills in a relaxed environment. Dancers of all experience levels are welcome. Refreshments will be provided. Admission is $10 per person.

Larson has taught at The Phipps for the past four years and owns the Ballroom and Wedding Dance Studio in Minneapolis. He performed for two seasons with The Continental Ballet Company.

Summer art classes set

Enrollment is now open for Summer Art Camp classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, mosaic, puppetry and more for ages 4-18, from June 22-Aug. 14, at The Phipps Center for the Arts.
