Hammond Heartland Days and the United Fire & Rescue Car Show are scheduled Aug. 6-9.

The four-day event features track and truck pulls, card tournaments, Bingo, children's activities, refreshments, music, fireworks Saturday and a parade Sunday afternoon.

Hudson girl in 'Little Mermaid'

Alaina Barthman is among the cast members in the Old Gem Theater production of Hans Christian Andersen's tale "Little Mermaid." Show times are at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 30 and 31, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2.

The story of a mermaid who sacrifices herself for true love is produced as the culmination of four weeks of classes and rehearsals for the Old Gem Theater's Young Performers Ensemble.

Old Gem offers classes

Openings are still available in musical theater camps at the Old Gem Theater, 116 S. Knowles Ave., New Richmond. Youth will learn musical numbers and scenes from Broadway hits. Cost is $60 per session, $160 for all three.

Session I, Monday-Thursday, Aug. 3-6: for 8-12-year-olds, 4-6 p.m., "Annie"; for 13-year-olds and up, 6-8 p.m., "West Side Story."

Session II, Monday-Thursday, Aug. 10-13: for 8-12-year-olds, 4-6 p.m., "High School Musical"; for 13-year-olds and up, 6-8 p.m., "Phantom of the Opera."

Session III, Monday-Thursday, Aug. 17-20: for 8-12-year-olds, 4-6 p.m., "Sound of Music"; for 13-year-olds and up, 6-8 p.m., "Grease."

Orchestra needs you

The St. Croix Valley Symphony Orchestra is growing and needs regular musicians and alternates who are proficient on their chosen instrument and have experience playing in an orchestra.

Auditions are in early September. Interested players should prepare one or two short pieces (two-three minutes each) that demonstrate musicality and technique.

Rehearsals are Monday nights in River Falls beginning Sept. 14. The season runs through May and includes six concerts. For more information, or to schedule an audition, e-mail scvsorchestra@gmail.com.

Artspace effort includes Hudson

Artspace Projects Inc. is participating in a public meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Stillwater Public Library to explain the types of multi-use cultural spaces Artspace has created across the country, including live-work spaces for artists.

This meeting will launch the second phase of a cultural needs and use assessment to determine the types of space needed by individual artists and arts organizations in the Greater Stillwater-Lake Elmo region, which includes Hudson.

An online survey targeting artists of all disciplines will be open from Aug. 6-Oct. 1 to establish local artists' interest in affordable live-work, shared or studio-work space. Up to 5,000 artists within a 50-mile region, including Hudson, will be invited to participate.

Artspace is a nationally recognized non-profit real estate developer for the arts, based in Minneapolis.

Veteran cruise sets sail

The eighth annual Stillwater Veterans Memorial Benefit Dinner Cruise is scheduled Monday, Aug. 17, at the Stillwater Dock, with boarding beginning at 5:30 p.m. Included are cruise, dinner, program, music and cash bar.

Speaker on the cruise will be Col. Melvin "Buzz" Kriesel, a retired Army officer who served from 1954 to 1996. He will speak about how the citizens of North Platte, Neb., served daily meals (6 million total) to military personnel passing through the town during World War II.

Tickets are $25, $15 of which is tax-deductible. Orders with checks may be mailed to Veterans Memorial, PO Box 137, Stillwater MN 55082. Priority mail order deadline is Aug. 3 with a $1 handling and mailing charge. After that, tickets will be held at the "Will Call" on the steamboat.
