The Hudson City Council on Monday night (April 9) extended the deadlines for two restaurants to open in the city without losing the liquor licenses they were granted earlier in the year.

Representatives of Azul Tequila Bar and Grill had a relatively easy time persuading the council to push its deadline to Aug. 31, a 120-day extension.

Eau Claire real estate agent Don Myers explained that the restaurant owners signed a lease agreement with the owner of the strip mall on Hanley Road next to the Aldi store and thought they were ready to go with the project.

But the mall's mortgage holder also wanted to review the lease, which set the project back at least six weeks.

"Personally, we have seen all sorts of banking issues. I can see why that would be a problem," said a sympathetic Alderperson Lee Wyland.

Russell Evenson, who hopes to purchase the old post office on Locust Street and open a restaurant there, wasn't treated as gently.

In the Finance Committee meeting that preceded the council meeting, Council President Lori Bernard expressed displeasure about being told previously that Evenson had an agreement to purchase the building.

"So, in a way, I feel misled," Bernard said.

Alderperson Rich Vanselow also was unhappy with Evenson.

"I would like to know when the applicant knew he couldn't make the 120 days," Vanselow said, referring to the previous deadline of April 30.

Vanselow voted against extending Evenson's deadline by another 120 days, or until Aug. 31.
