Despite no firm plans for a new middle or high school, the Hudson Board of Education is on the hunt for a suitable site to build one.

The board heard a report Tuesday, Jan. 11 from Hoffman LLC, the Appleton architectural firm that designed and built River Crest, about the property the district owns on County UU and Crosby Drive, just west of the Hudson soccer fields.

The report evaluated the site using several criteria including usable land area, road access, utility service and site development costs. The property came up wanting in all area.

Site negatives included:

--useable areas on the site aren't contiguous and topography includes steep slopes, significant elevations and a large drainage ravine.

--the site is not in the city limits and is not served by city utility service, requiring annexation and lengthy utility extensions.

--existing adjacent roadways, specifically the two-lane County UU, may be inadequate to accommodate the increased traffic.

--substantial site development costs.

While the report said there were several unknowns regarding the development of the site, it described the property as a "very poor site for development of a large secondary school and would be better suited for a smaller school development and/or development for residential or recreational uses."

Superintendent Mary Bowen-Eggebraaten stressed to the board and the audience that no solution to the secondary space need has been decided upon. "There is significant work that we need to do with the board and the community before we decide on a secondary solution."
