The Create Space is a studio for all ages
Rachel Navaro calls herself an artist and a children's book author, but she is so much more.
The Twin Cities native, now Hudson resident opened The Create Space, in Dania Hall this week.
"I wanted to create a space that would be comfortable and convenient for adults and kids," said Navaro. She has succeeded. The Create Space, a 1,800-square-foot area, is made up of three rooms on the second floor of the historic Dania Hall building: the main studio, a storage room and a reception room.
"I want to create a community of people who want to learn about art, talk with others and where people can inspire each other," said Navaro, who has had years of inspiring people.
She left Minnesota for the University of Oregon, graduating with a double major in math and Spanish and a minor in anthropology.
"I did take art classes and I feel like I have been an artist all of my life," said Navaro, who then traveled to Mexico where she studied jewelry making and midwifery. After two years, she returned to the Metro area taking a position with Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, working in the Teen Age Medical Services (TAMS).
She developed an art outreach and health education outreach program for students ages 10 to 23 and worked with Minneapolis schools primarily. The program was funded by a grant, so it was no cost to the schools.
"Initially, it was focused on Latino youth," said Navaro, who also developed Urban Farms. "I had a lot of freedom to make up my curriculum."
Today, she is taking that energy and applying it to her newest endeavor.
"We have a dynamic art community in Hudson," said Navaro, who moved here with her family because of the sense of community. "When we decided to buy a house, we decided to settle in Hudson."
The Create Space offers monthly memberships with supplies, monthly memberships without supplies, day passes and art classes.
Unique to The Create Space are the Kids Art Party, perfect for birthdays and Arts n Spirits Party, which is appealing for wedding showers, adult birthdays or ladies' night out. Each event is two hours long.
Summer camp for kids began this week with Imagine This, July features Jammin' Art and August will be Modern Masters. The classes are designed for children ages 7 to 13.
