Dance classes begin Sept. 13 at Phipps

Dance classes begin Sept. 13 at Phipps

The Phipps Center for the Arts offers dance technique classes for children and adults beginning in September and continuing through May. Students can now register for ballroom dance, swing and salsa, jazz/hip-hop, musical theater, tap, ballet, lyrical, modern, preballet/tap and bharatanatyam (South Indian classical dance). The class year is divided into four quarters of eight weeks each. All instructors are experienced as both educators and performers.

Bharatanatyam

On Saturdays, beginning Sept. 13, Jocelyn Gorham will teach South Indian Bharatanatyam, Repertoire, Level 4, from 8-10 a.m. biweekly for a fee of $64, South Indian Bharatanatyam, Level 3, from 10-11 a.m. for a fee of $88 per quarter, South Indian Bharatanatyam, Level 2, from 11 a.m.-noon for a fee of $88 per quarter, and South Indian Bharatanatyam, Level 1, from 12:15-1 p.m. for a fee of $72 per quarter. Gorham received her BA in theater arts/dance from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

Ballroom

On Sundays, beginning Sept. 14, Tom Larson will offer Beginning Ballroom from 4-5 p.m., Beginning Salsa/Latin from 5-6 p.m., Intermediate Ballroom from 6-7 p.m., and Advanced Ballroom from 7-8 p.m. The fee for each class is $80 per quarter. Partners are encouraged, but not required. Larson is the director of Beginners Dance Studio in Minneapolis.

Jazz, hip-hop, other

On Mondays, beginning Sept. 15, Jen Swanson will teach Children's Jazz/Hip-Hop, Level 1, ages 7-8, from 4:15-5:15 p.m. and Children's Jazz/Hip-Hop, Level 1, ages 9-12, from 5:15-6:15 p.m. for a fee of $68 each per quarter. Swanson studied at Broadway Dance Center and Ballet Academy East.

On Mondays, beginning Sept. 15, Barb Zak will offer Teen and Adult Jazz/Hip-Hop, Level 3, from 6:15-7:30 p.m. and Teen and Adult Jazz/Hip-Hop, Level 4, from 7:30-8:45 p.m. for a fee of $84 each per quarter. Zak received her degree in dance education from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

On Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 16, Swanson will teach Children's Jazz/Hip-Hop, Level 2B, ages 9-12, from 4:15-5:15 p.m., Children's Jazz/Hip-Hop, Levels 3-4, ages 10-12, from 5:15-6:15 p.m., Teen and Adult Jazz/Hip-Hop, Level 1, from 6:15-7:15 p.m., and Teen and Adult Jazz/Hip-Hop, Level 2, from 7:15-8:15 p.m. for a fee of $68 each per quarter. Teen and Adult Tap, Level 3, will be offered from 8:15-9 p.m. for a fee of $49 per quarter.

On Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 16, Zak will teach Children's Jazz/Hip-Hop, Level 2A, ages 8-10, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. for a fee of $68 per quarter, Teen and Adult Tap, Level 1, from 5:30-6:15 p.m. for a fee of $49 per quarter, Teen and Adult Ballet, Level 2, from 6:15-7:30 p.m., and Teen and Adult Lyrical, Levels 3 and 4, from 7:30-8:45 p.m. for a fee of $84 each per quarter.

Pre-ballet

On Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 17, Stephanie Campbell will offer Preballet/Tap 1, ages 4-5, from 3:15-4 p.m., Preballet/Tap 2, ages 5-6, from 4-4:45 p.m., and Preballet/Tap 3, ages 6-7, from 4:45-5:30 p.m. for a quarterly fee of $49 each. Modern, Level 3, from 7:30-8:45 p.m. will be offered for a fee of $84 per quarter. Campbell has a BFA in dance from UW-Stevens Point.

Tap, musical theater

On Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 17, Christina Leines will teach Children's Tap, Levels 1-2, ages 7-12, from 5:45-6:30 p.m., Children's Musical Theater (two years of dance training required), ages 9-12, from 6:30-7:15 p.m., and Teen and Adult Tap, Level 2, from 7:15-8 p.m., for a quarterly fee of $49 each. Teen and Adult Musical Theater (two years of dance training required), from 8-9 p.m., will be offered for a quarterly fee of $68. Leines has been participating in theater, dance and music over 30 years.

Ballet

On Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 17, Pat Graf will offer Children's Ballet, Level 1, ages 7-12, from 4:15-5:15 p.m. for a fee of $68 per quarter. Graf received her BA, including a dance minor, from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

On Thursdays, beginning Sept. 18, Marcia Keegan will offer Children's Ballet, Level 2, ages 8-12, from 4:15-5:15 p.m. for a fee of $68 per quarter. Teen and Adult Ballet, Level 1, from 5:15-6:30 p.m., Ballet with Pointe, Level 3, from 6:30-7:45 p.m., and Ballet with Pointe, Level 4, from 7:45-9 p.m. will be offered for a quarterly fee of $84 each. Keegan is currently teaching ballet for Minnesota Dance Theatre and The Dance Institute and has performed locally with Children's Theatre, Minnesota Opera and the Guthrie.

Registration

Reduced rates are available for two successive quarters for all classes except salsa, ballroom and bharatanatyam. Fees are due one week prior to the first class of each quarter (eight weeks).
