Dances explore the dark side of fairy tales
"Dances, Chances, Circumstances 8: Grimm," a dance concert showcasing the work of nine area choreographers, will be performed Aug. 10 - 12 at The Phipps Center for the Arts.
A variety of dance styles, including modern, hip-hop, lyrical, musical theater, and jazz interpret the dark world of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales.
This performance features 33 dancers, ages 15 and older, from the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul area, Rochester, and eastern Wisconsin.
"Sleeping Beauty" features modern choreography set by Stephanie Campbell and pointe work set by Alyssa Casey. The choreographers comment, "Rather than focusing on Sleeping Beauty, we looked at the story from the Evil Fairies point of view. How did it feel to be left out? Revenge, spite, and anger are feelings we explored in this piece. Along with that, we have the pull of the Good Fairies and Sleeping Beauty stuck in the middle.
Chorographer Bre Poliak explains, "'Let Your Hair Down' is a fun, play-on-words, hip-hop piece that abstractly tells the story of Rapunzel. It is upbeat, sassy, and jam-packed with major talent. You've never seen Rapunzel quite like this."
Dynamic contemporary jazz plays out the story of "Snow White" through a raw and edgy point of view piece choreographed by Maggie Hoadley-Edwards. She comments, "The characters you thought you knew - Snow White, the Evil Queen, and the Seven Dwarfs - are looked at through a whole new light. With a dark and evil twist to the ever-classic fairy tale, this piece will leave audiences on the edge of their seat."
