Brendan Dassey's lawyer says his client will probably appeal his conviction in the slaying of Teresa Halbach.

But a final decision won't be made until after Dassey is sentenced on Aug. 6, and after the state public defender's office gives him a new attorney to handle the appeal.

Mark Fremgen of Oshkosh represented Dassey, 17, in his trial last month. Fremgen says he'll file the paperwork which preserves the boy's right to appeal and then his new lawyer can take it from there.

Dassey faces life in prison for raping Halbach in 2005, and helping his uncle Steven Avery kill her at his family's auto salvage yard in Manitowoc County.

Fremgen tells the Appleton Post-Crescent the next lawyer may discover a new appeal strategy. And Dassey could claim that previous lawyers in his case were ineffective.

One attorney quit after learning he was a distant relative of the Halbach family. And another attorney let Dassey be interviewed by police without having a lawyer present.
