The board tabled any decision on a boundary adjustment that would change some neighborhoods from attendance at River Crest to Rock Elementary.

After hearing from parents, some in tears, who objected to their children being transferred from River Crest to Rock, and after a lengthy discussion of their own, the board requested that the administration investigate the following options:

--add two to three classrooms to River Crest over the summer using approximately $500,000 from the fund balance originally set aside for River Crest construction but that was not used.

--explore an "enrollment management plan" that would cap or close grade levels to any new students at River Crest. Any new students would be assigned to Rock Elementary and transportation would be provided by the district.

--exceed district class size guidelines at River Crest. The guidelines are K-2, 18-22 students, grade 3-5, 22-27 students.

This is the second time district administrators have been sent back to the drawing board on the issue. Prior to the board's vote to table any action, district administrators presented a revised plan after their original recommendation was rejected at the January board meeting. The new proposal left the Heritage Greens neighborhood at River Crest while the neighborhoods of Carriage Lane/W. Red Cedar Canyon/E. Red Cedar Canyon/Lighthouse would be assigned to Rock.

The administration's new plan affected 45 K-4 River Crest students and their pre-school siblings. The previous plan called for Heritage Greens to be included in the change. The original plan would have affected 115 River Crest students and their pre-school siblings. Superintendent Mary Bowen-Eggebraaten said that she regretted that a boundary change had to be considered so soon after last year's but that enrollment at River Crest, now at 92 percent of capacity, exceeded what the district had planned on.

Enrollment at River Crest stands at 544 students with all 24 of its classrooms in use. Kindergarten and second grades classes are at over over class size guidelines. Enrollment at Rock Elementary is 430, 72 percent of capacity, with 20 of its 24 classrooms occupied.
