Domestic turns to drug bust
The St. Croix County Sheriff's Department responded to a domestic complaint at 1:12 a.m. on May 6 at 1504 64th Ave. in rural Hammond.
Upon arrival, deputies spoke with a woman who said she resided at the home with her boyfriend, Brian Van Beek, 26.
According to Sheriff Dennis Hillstead, Van Beek had left the scene when officers arrived.
During the course of taking the woman's statement, she took deputies to an enclosed room above the garage where they discovered approximately 500 young marijuana plants growing in hydroponic pots.
"It was a fairly sophisticated set-up," Hillstead commented, "with the grow lights and hydroponics."
The plants were in the early stages of growth, according to Hillstead, with the average plant being five to 10 inches in height.
Van Beek was later arrested on felony charges of manufacturing with the intent to deliver THC, and dealer possession of an untaxable controlled substance.
Criminal charges were also filed against Van Beek on May 12 for bail jumping-felony and contact after domestic abuse arrest.
A preliminary hearing date for the above charges has been set for May 23 at 10 a.m. in Courtroom 3 at the district court building in Hudson.
