SOMERSET -- An icy road resulted in St. Croix County's second traffic fatality of the year Friday morning.

Sheriff Dennis Hillstead said James R. Stone, 44, Dresser died as result of a two-car crash on Hwy 35 about one-quarter mile south of the Polk County line. The accident occurred about 6:49 a.m.

The sheriff's accident report said Harrison J. Pederson, 18, Somerset was driving north on Hwy 35 when he apparently lost control of his 1977 Mercury Mountaineer on the snow covered road and slid across the median into the southbound lane.

Stone was driving south in a 2006 Chrysler van struck the Mercury on the passenger side. Harrison was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected form his car. He was transported to North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis. Stone, who was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene.

There were 18 fatalities on county roads in 2007.
