Droppo's Stout team in Ohio hockey tourney
Justene Droppo, a 2008 graduate of Hudson High School, plays left wing on the UW-Stout women's hockey team that has been invited to play in the National Championship Tournament in Wooster, Ohio, on March 9-11.
As a club team, it is partially funded by the university and by fund-raising, with equipment and uniforms provided by the students themselves. The team often faces difficulty in finding ice time; practices are usually at either 6 a.m. or 10 p.m.
Founded during the 1996 school year, the women's team competes in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, Division II, Western Division. The team is undefeated (13-0) and ranked No. 1 in its division.
The team also must raise funds in order to travel to the tournament in Ohio. The team is reaching out to friends and families to help cover the cost of renting vans, hotels and gas.
Droppo is a senior at Stout, majoring in criminal justice vocational rehabilitation.
