Evenson shines at All-Star Classic
Hudson's Austin Evenson provided the game-winning RBIs in both of the West team's victories at the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Classic June 29-30 at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
The WBCA All-Star Classic featured 72 of the finest high school seniors in the state divided into four teams -- East (Milwaukee area), South (Madison area), North (Green Bay/Fox Valley area) and West (La Crosse, Stevens Point, Eau Claire area) playing in a round-robin format.
Evenson capped a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk-off, bases-loaded double to give the West All-Stars a 3-2 victory over the East in the first game Saturday.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Turtle Lake/Clayton's Kyle Larson and Bruce's Mitchell Johnson both reached on errors. Westin Wuethrich of Greenwood doubled in a run to make it a 2-1 ballgame, and after an intentional walk to Amery's Jake Mullendore loaded the bases, Evenson lined the first pitch he saw to left field for a double to drive in the tying and game-winning runs.
On Sunday against the South All-Stars, Evenson had an RBI single in the fifth inning to extend the West's lead to 3-0. The run turned out to be a big one as the West hung on for a 4-2 victory.
Earlier Sunday Evenson went hitless as a pair of North All-Star pitchers combined on a three-hit, 2-0, shutout victory over the West.
Evenson was one of four BRC players, including Alex Call of River Falls, who suited up for the West team. Other area players on the team included New Richmond's Drew Durham and Ellsworth's James Georgakas.
The West, South and North all-star teams each finished with records of 2-1 at the classic while the East team finished 0-3.
