One of Wisconsin's two medical schools has received its largest private gift ever. Robert and Patricia Kern pledged $10 million to the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The former owners of Generac Power Systems will help the suburban Milwaukee school hire researchers, and help buy equipment that finds tiny concentrations of molecules which can reveal major diseases like cancer and heart problems.

It's all part of an innovation cluster the Medical College is developing in its bio-technology center.

College president Michael Bolger says the Kerns' gift will help move the school into "the next echelon of research in molecular biology and cellular biology and genetics."

Physiology professor Andrew Greene says the grant will provide some bolder research which the National Institutes of Health may be too conservative to provide.
