Former Hudson Area Swim Association coach new UWRF swim coach

Former Hudson Area Swim Association coach Ryan Hawke has been named the head coach of the UW-River Falls men's and women's swimming and diving teams, according to Athletic Director Roger Ternes.

Hawke was the teams' interim head coach in the 2010-11 season.

"We are pleased to remove the interim tag from the head swim position and appreciate Coach Hawke accepting the assignment," said Ternes. "Ryan's dedication and loyalty to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls is very much appreciated."

Hawke was a swimmer for the Falcon men's team from 2001-05. He was the team's captain and earned four letters. He is part of two UWRF record holding relay teams -- the 200 and 400 freestyle teams.

Hawke was named the head coach of the Hudson Area Swim Association in March 2009. His duties included designing and implementation season training plans; developing goals and direction for the club; overseeing a staff of five coaches; increasing club membership and competitive level and helping plan, organize and run meets with over 500 athletes.

In the 2008-09 year he was the head swimming and diving coach at North St. Paul, Minn., High School. From 2005-07 and again in 2008-09 he was an assistant coach with the Falcons. In 2007-08 he was an assistant coach with in the Shawano school district. He was an assistant swimming and diving coach at Hastings, Minn., High School in the 2006-07 school year.

In 2006-07 he was a K-6 art teacher in the Shawano school district. He worked as a substitute teacher in 2006-07 in the Prescott school district and taught eighth grade art as well as worked as a member of the technology support staff in 2006.

While competing with the Falcons he earned WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll recognition for four straight years and in his senior season in 2005 he was a nominee for the WIAC Scholar-Athlete award. Hawke earned the UWRF Chancellor's Award in 2004. He was named to the UWRF dean's list in nine consecutive semesters.

Hawke earned his undergraduate degree from UWRF in 2005 with a major in art education with a coaching minor. He earned his master's degree in education from the University of Minnesota in August 2010.

Hawke's wife's name is Katie and they have a son, Keegan, 2, and a daughter, Gabriela, who was born last September.
