Former St. Joseph town official misses court date
A former town of St. Joseph clerk/treasurer charged with misconduct in office and forgery failed to appear for a preliminary hearing March 5 in St. Croix County Circuit Court.
Court records said Mary Evelyn Stanley, 33, Forest Lake, Minn., was being held by the military on a worthless check charge while on active duty. Public defender John Kucinski said Stanley told him she was not able to be released until her discharge from active duty.
Stanley is on active duty in San Antonio, Texas, with the U.S. Army 44th Medical Battalion out of Ft. Snelling, according to court records.
The court issued a warrant for her arrest.
The criminal complaint alleged Stanley negotiated checks worth more than $5,700 on the town of St. Joseph account with the town board chairman's signature that he did not sign.
The complaint also alleged Stanley used the town's credit card to pay her own dental bills in Hudson. She was fired as the town's clerk/treasurer on Dec. 21, 2011, for exceeding her legal authority in the position, the complaint said.
