Georgia Elizabeth Weitkamp, 99, of Hudson passed away Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Christian Community Home.
She was born on Feb. 11, 1909, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Aussieker) Fuhrmeister, in Peabody, Kansas.
She graduated from Midland College in Fremont, Neb., and did graduate work in library science at the Universities of Iowa and Illinois. She returned to Midland College as its head librarian until her marriage.
She married Alvin Weitkamp on July 21, 1933, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont. They had three children, William, Elizabeth and Kathryn. The family moved to Hudson in 1942.
Georgia taught in the Afton-Lakeland Elementary School. She was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church. She volunteered in the community in many ways including serving as a Girl Scout leader and as a guide at the Octagon House, and helped support an immigrant Hmong family. She partnered with her husband, Alvin, in many civic activities and together they donated the land for the Hudson School Forest.
Georgia also enjoyed music, crossword puzzles, reading and swimming.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin, in 2001 and brother, Andrew Fuhrmeister.
Georgia is survived by her son, William (Audrey) Weitkamp of Seattle; daughters, Elizabeth Weitkamp of Denver and Kathryn (Roger) Paschke of New Jersey; six grandchildren, Erick Weitkamp, Jay Larrivee, Gretchen Weitkamp, Laurie Weitkamp, Gwen Jones and Maura Moyle; eight great-grandchildren; and brother, Lucian Fuhrmeister of Nebraska.
A memorial service for Georgia will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 920 Third St., Hudson.
