Girls have mixed results in holiday action
The Hudson girls basketball team split a pair of games at the AAU Holiday Classic at Menomonie last week.
The Raiders fell to Richland Center by a score of 50-45 on Wednesday, Dec. 28, but rebounded to defeat Minneapolis North 48-23 on Friday, Dec. 30. The week of non-conference action left the girls with a 4-6 overall record.
Senior center Katie Layman led the Raiders in scoring in both games, tallying 16 points against Richland Center and 17 against Minneapolis North. She also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in the Richland Center game and six rebounds vs. North.
"Katie is really coming around," said Hudson coach Dave Johnson. "She's put five good ballgames together. We're starting to get her the ball and she's starting to take control."
What Johnson is looking for now is more scoring from the perimeter and better ball-handling against the press.
The Raiders led Richland Center 12-7 at the end of the first quarter, but had trouble bringing the ball up court against the press in the second period and trailed 25-18 at halftime.
A good third quarter brought the Hudson girls within two points of their opponents and they tied the score at 38-38 early in the fourth. The Richland Center girls rallied again, however, outscoring the Raiders 12-7 the rest of the way.
The Raiders scored 18 points in the second quarter of Friday's game to take a commanding 29-11 lead at halftime.
This year's Minneapolis North squad isn't the same caliber of team that Hudson has faced in the past, Johnson said. He said that a couple of its players from last year transferred to other schools and their best guard was on the bench with an injury.
The Raider girls travel to Red Wing, Minn., Friday (Jan. 6) for another non-conference game. They resume conference play Jan. 13 at Eau Claire Memorial.
