Girls hockey: Raiders knock off top-ranked Fusion
Four different Hudson players scored goals and goaltender Alise Riedel made 40 saves as the Hudson girls' hockey team defeated the top-ranked and defending state champion St. Croix Valley Fusion 4-2 Thursday night (Feb. 4) in Hudson.
It was the Fusion's first loss to a Wisconsin team in two years and its' first-ever loss in Big Rivers Conference play. The team is a cooperative program consisting of players from River Falls, Baldwin-Woodville, St. Croix Central and Spring Valley high schools.
After a scoreless first period, Abby Singerhouse, Bailey Knight and Erin Anderson scored second period goals to stake the Raiders to a 3-0 lead. Emily Stankevitz widened the gap to 4-0 early in the third period before the Fusion mounted a rally.
Alice Cranston and Heather Shew scored for St. Croix Valley but Riedel and the Raider defense didn't let the Fusion get any closer and posted a 4-2 victory.
Hudson improved to 13-2-4 overall, 6-1-1 in the BRC while the Fusion dropped to 17-4-1, 7-1-0 in conference play.
St. Croix Valley went undefeated on its way to winning the state championship last year. Its previous three losses this season have all come to Minnesota teams.
The win also snapped the Fusion's 23-game BRC winning streak dating back to the first season of conference play in 2007-08.
