The Raider girls' hockey team continued its winning ways with a 7-3 victory over New Richmond last Tuesday, Dec. 4, to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Sara Iacobello had a hat trick, Sydney Squires tallied two goals and two assists, and the Raiders fought off a late charge by the Tigers to win their second straight game.

Last Tuesday Julia Douglas put Hudson on the board early in the game with a quick shot past the New Richmond netminder. Taylor Beckman started the play by firing the puck down low to Ali Takkunen, who worked the puck out to Douglas in front of the net for the goal.

Twenty seconds later, Iacobello put the Raiders up 2-0 on a nice feed from Squires to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.

The second period started like the first with an early goal by the Raiders. Iacobello slid the puck past the New Richmond goalie for her second goal of the game after strong pressure in the offensive zone by the entire Raider unit. Iacobello's linemates, Squires and Bailey Knight assisted on the goal.

Two minutes later, Iacobello completed her hat trick to extend the Raider lead to 4-0. Caitlyn Bjornstad moved the puck from her defensive position to Knight, who in turn found Iacobello in the slot for the goal. The goal ignited the crowd and prompted a lone hat to be thrown onto the ice to mark Iacobello's achievement.

The Raiders looked to be in control of the game heading into the third period with a 4-0 lead but New Richmond had other ideas. Within three minutes, New Richmond's Emilee Wolf and Alli Wielinski each found the back of the net and with 14 minutes remaining in the game the score was 4-2 with momentum strongly in New Richmond's favor.

The Raiders were able to meet the challenge and midway through the third period were back on the board with a goal by Squires. Bjornstad again jumped into the play and found Douglas in the corner. Douglas feathered a pass to Squires who firmly put the puck in the top shelf to expand the lead to 5-2.

The momentum continued to tilt back to Hudson and five minutes later Squires had her second goal of the game with a strong rush past the New Richmond defenders.

Raider defenseman Breylyn Bolf made sure Hudson wasn't going to relinquish control when she scored on an impressive end-to-end rush a short time later to give Hudson a commanding 7-2 lead.

The gritty New Richmond team got a goal from Tiffany Olek as time was winding down to make the final 7-3.

Raider netminder Nali Mullan contributed to the victory with another solid effort and 28 saves.

The Raiders will look for their third straight win Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. at home against Tartan (Minn.).
