Golfers advance to sectional, place fourth at New Richmond Regional
Senior Jill Wanner and junior Maggie Lewis each carded rounds of 94 and the Raider girls’ golf team finished nine strokes better than Rice Lake to keep its season alive with a fourth place finish at the WIAA Division 1 Regional Tournament last Wednesday in New Richmond.
Eau Claire North won the regional title with a total team score of 347 and host New Richmond took second with 351 while River Falls was third with 360 and Hudson finished fourth with 402.
All four teams advanced to the WIAA Sectional tournament Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Forest Hills Golf Course in La Crosse.
“We are eager to be at Forest Hill in La Crosse for sectionals,” Raider coach Brian Burbach said after a practice round there Monday. “The course is in spectacular shape. Today's practice went really smooth and the girls looked prepared. The exciting news is that Hudson is flying under the radar. The sectional leaders are here, but so are we. We really are looking forward to show them all that we have.”
Eau Claire North, New Richmond, River Falls and Hudson will join Tomah , Marshfield, Holmen and Stevens Point at the sectional tournament. Those four teams advanced out of the Stevens Point Regional held at the Stevens Point Country Club last Wednesday. Tomah and Marshfield tied for first with scores of 387 and Holmen finished third with 397 while Stevens Point was fourth with 406.
Wanner and Lewis tied for 11th place at the New Richmond Regional with identical scores of 94. Sophomore Lucy Stiles added a 101 and freshman Lexi Jonas finished with 107 to round out the Raiders team score while senior Lauren Berglund carded a 113.
The top two teams, and the top three individuals who are not members of qualifying teams, at the La Crosse Sectional will qualify for the WIAA State Golf Championships Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 14-15, at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
